About Moon Phase Emoji

A simple, free website that shows you the real moon phase as an emoji, in real time, for anyone on Earth.

Hi, I'm Joseph Adam

Hi, I'm Joseph Adam. I have loved looking up at the night sky ever since I was a little kid. My dad would take me outside with a small telescope, and we would spend hours just watching the moon change its shape.

For the last ten years I have been writing about the moon, the stars, and how the sky works — in a way that anyone can understand, even a five year old. I believe you do not need a science degree to enjoy the moon. You only need a clear night and a little curiosity.

I built this website so that you can always know which moon emoji matches the real moon in the sky right now. Every number on this site is calculated with the same math NASA uses, so it is accurate to within a few minutes of the real thing.

All moon data on this site is calculated with Jean Meeus' Astronomical Algorithms (2nd edition) and cross-checked against NASA reference data. The math is the same kind used by space agencies, so the numbers line up with the real moon in the sky to within a few minutes.

Our Mission

We built Moon Phase Emoji so that anyone, anywhere, can know the real moon phase with one tap. No login, no app to install, no confusing science words. You open the page, and the moon is right there.

The moon is the same for everyone on Earth at the same time. We want every kid, every parent, every teacher, and every curious person to be able to look up and know exactly what the moon is doing tonight — and to grab the right emoji to share with a friend.

We keep the words simple on purpose. You do not need a science degree to enjoy the moon. You only need a clear night and a little curiosity. Everything on this site is written so a five year old can follow along.

How We Calculate The Moon

The moon phase is not a guess. It is real astronomy math. We use the same kind of calculations astronomers have used for hundreds of years, refined by Jean Meeus in his book Astronomical Algorithms. We then check our numbers against NASA's published moon tables to make sure they match.

Real math

Every number on this site comes from a formula, not a guess.

NASA-checked

Cross-checked against NASA reference data so the moon matches the real sky.

No astrology

We publish factual astronomy only — no horoscopes, no zodiacs.
